João Henrique Viegas (b. 1999) is a Portuguese artist whose work revolves mainly around the themes of identity, community, space and memory. In his process, the artist sometimes reflects on his own experience and other times he tries to produce work that helps him better understand how societies and images shape each other.

As a self-described multimedia artist, he employs different media — from traditional media like performance and photography to digital media like augmented reality and game engines — to help (de)construct, negotiate, reshape or process the questions that come up in his process of exploration, to hopefully uncover new insights.

Recently, the artist has attempted to shift his practice towards more socially engaged interventions, believing his work gains a lot from seeing how other people react to the materials he deals with and what is uncovered in conversations with others.

He holds a B.A. in Multimedia Art from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon University and a Master’s Degree in Fine Art and Design from the Photography and Society Programme at The Royal Academy of Art - The Hague.

He is based between the Hague, Netherlands and Lisbon, Portugal.
